3:30 a.m.,
Grandma was all alone
Fixing the boiler took 20 minutes.
It took the partner an hour to leave.
When the phone rang, Partner Lee (54, plumbing & boiler specialist) had just gotten home from a late-night delivery gig. His shoulders were heavy after a full day of hard work.
It was a PanSol app notification.
He paused for a moment. 1.2km. -11°C. Living alone. He put his jacket back on.
The daughter who sent twelve texts
At that same hour, Ms. Choi (45) in Busan couldn't sleep. She'd called her mother, who lives alone in Seoul, and something was off in her voice.
She said it was fine, but her mother's voice was already trembling. Busan to Seoul is two and a half hours even by KTX. At 3 a.m., there were no trains.
The daughter opened the PanSol app. Her brother had told her about it last month. She moved her fingers over the chat box.
A partner 1.2km from her location has responded.
He's leaving now. Estimated arrival in about 12 minutes.
The daughter gripped her phone and kept watching the app. On the map, a single blue dot moved slowly toward her mother's home.
When the blue dot moved,
I could breathe for the first time.
Climbing four flights at -11°C
Partner Lee arrived at 3:31 a.m. It was a 4th-floor walk-up with no elevator. Carrying his tool bag up the stairs, the chill was different on each floor. The 4th-floor hallway was no different from outside.
He rang the bell and waited a long while. The footsteps were slow. The grandmother was walking carefully.
The door opened. The grandmother had a thick blanket draped over her shoulders. He could see the indoor thermometer. 9 degrees.
The one who was cold said she was sorry.
The boiler came back to life in 18 minutes
The ignition fuse had blown. A common failure. He took the part from his bag and replaced it.
He pressed the boiler's power button. A red light came on. There was the sound of something starting to turn. The grandmother pressed her hands together.
Those words didn't seem to be just about the boiler.
While tidying up the receipt, Partner Lee glanced around. There was a dining table in one corner of the living room. A single rice bowl sat empty, the moisture dried up. He couldn't tell if it was from last night's dinner, or the night before.
On top of the fridge were photos. The grandmother in her youth, children, family portraits. In this home now, the grandmother was alone.
He was about to leave, but stopped.
The grandmother hesitated for a moment.
What he did before the receipt
Partner Lee opened the fridge. Three eggs, half a pot of doenjang stew, kimchi. A single pack of ramen caught his eye.
The grandmother waved her hand. "Oh no, it's fine, that sort of thing at this hour."
Partner Lee was already pulling out a pot.
A little past 4 a.m., in a small Changdong kitchen, there was the smell of ramen boiling.
The two sat across from each other and ate ramen. The grandmother was awkward at first, but she picked up her spoon. Partner Lee said nothing. He just ate with her.
At that table where a single bowl had sat empty, that night two bowls were set.
"With my children far away,
I thought eating alone was just natural.
But today... it was warm."
4:53 a.m., a text from Busan
As Partner Lee left and pressed "job complete" in the app, the daughter got a notification too.
Two minutes later, a text arrived.
Afterward
Partner Lee went out to work the next morning as usual. He didn't think of the night before as anything special. "She just looked hungry. There was one pack of ramen."
Grandma Kim, when her daughter came down a few days later, reportedly showed her the PanSol app and said: "Save this. Even alone, I'm not scared anymore."
Ms. Choi signed up for monthly regular care for her mother's home after that day. "I always felt guilty for not being able to look after her from far away. Now I feel a little more at ease."
