① Your home's breaker panel looks like this

The breaker box is usually on the entry or veranda wall. Open it and it's structured like this.

⚡ Breaker-box structure
๐Ÿ”ด
Main breaker (ELB)
Cuts the whole home's power. Flip it and everything is OFF. Largest, at the top.
๐ŸŸก
Earth-leakage breaker
Auto-cuts on leakage detection. Has a test button.
๐ŸŸ
AC-dedicated
Handles only the AC. Trips a lot each summer.
๐Ÿ”ต
Zone breakers
Split by room·living room·kitchen zone. Usually 5~8.

② The breaker tripped — how to respond by case

๐ŸŸก
Case 1. One zone breaker tripped
Cause: electrical overload in that zone (too many appliances on a power strip)
Fix: reduce that zone's devices, then flip the breaker back up.
✅ If no issue for 20 min after flipping, normal. If it repeats, get a pro check.
๐Ÿ”ด
Case 2. It trips again right after flipping up
Cause: leakage or a short circuit. Electricity is leaking or shorting somewhere.
Never force it up. There is a fire risk.
๐Ÿšจ Immediately unplug all devices and request a pro check.
๐ŸŸข
Case 3. The main breaker tripped
Cause: whole-home overload (summer AC + air fryer + rice cooker at once)
Fix: reduce appliance load, then flip up. Check the leakage-breaker test button.
✅ After flipping up, turn appliances on one by one to find the cause.
⚠️
If the breaker repeats flip-up-then-trip 3+ times, stop immediately. Internal overheating can lead to fire. Calling a pro is the right move.

③ DIY leakage check — find it yourself in 5 steps

If your bill suddenly rose, or touching an appliance gives a tingling feeling, suspect leakage.

1
Press the leakage-breaker test button
Pressing the test button should trip the breaker — that's normal. If it doesn't, the leakage breaker itself is faulty — replace immediately.
2
Unplug all electrical devices
Unplug all devices including fridge·washer·AC. But mind food spoilage with the fridge.
3
Flip the breaker up and check the meter
If the meter spins with nothing plugged in, the wiring itself is leaking. Call a pro immediately.
4
Plug devices in one by one, watching the breaker
If the breaker trips when one device is plugged in, that device is the cause. Repair or replace it.
5
Special check of bathroom·kitchen outlets
Outlets in damp areas need waterproof covers. Replace any uncovered outlet with a waterproof type immediately.

④ 7 danger signs that call for a pro right now

๐Ÿšจ If you have these symptoms, get a check immediately
⚡A tingle when you touch an appliance — the most direct sign of leakage. Stop using it immediately.
๐Ÿ”ŒAn outlet or switch is warm or hot — internal overheating. A pre-fire symptom.
๐Ÿ’กLights flicker or change brightness — a sign of bad wiring or a poor connection.
๐Ÿ‘ƒA burning·melting-plastic smell — insulation overheating. Cut the main power and call immediately.
๐Ÿ–คBlackened discoloration around an outlet — proof there was a past short or overheating.
๐Ÿ’งMoisture marks on a bathroom·kitchen outlet — shock·short risk. Cut that circuit immediately.
๐Ÿ“ˆSame usage but the bill rose 20%+ — possible hidden leakage. Self-check, then a pro.

⑤ 6 bill-saving tips — you can save ₩20k~40k a month

๐Ÿ”Œ
Cutting standby power is key
Standby power of TV·set-top box·microwave is ₩5,000~10,000/mo. Just the habit of switching off strip sockets saves it.
₩5,000~10,000/mo↓
๐Ÿ’ก
Switch to LED bulbs
Fluorescent → LED cuts power use 75% at the same brightness. 10× the lifespan saves replacement cost too.
Lighting cost 75%↓
๐ŸŒก️
Set the fridge temperature
Fridge 3~5°C, freezer -18°C is optimal. Setting it too low just uses more power. Opening the door often is also a bill culprit.
Fridge cost 10~15%↓
⏰
Use time-of-use rates
If a tiered rate applies, running the washer·dishwasher from midnight~9 AM is cheaper. Check time-band rates.
Avoid tiered brackets
๐Ÿ”‹
Check the energy-efficiency grade
A grade-1 appliance is 30~50% cheaper per year than grade-5. Always check the efficiency grade when buying.
30~50%/yr↓
๐ŸŒž
Maximize natural light
Turn off lights during the day and open curtains for natural light. 20~30% of indoor lighting is on unnecessarily during daytime.

Always leave electrical work to a licensed electrician. Electrical work by an unlicensed person is illegal, and insurance won't cover a fire·shock accident. Always verify the license.
