Why home-repair apps disappeared — why PanSol is different
⚠️ Why PanSol is different

Why did the old apps
disappear?
And how were we different.

You've probably been fooled by a home-repair app at least once.
That experience is what made PanSol.

✍️ PanSol Trust Team|๐Ÿ“… 2026|⏱ 12 min read|๐Ÿ›ก Trust-by-design special

In the early 2010s, home-repair matching apps poured out. The tagline "call a pro with one button" was new and exciting.

But where are those apps now? Most vanished without a trace. Why? And what makes PanSol different?

This post answers that question honestly. It's not a PR piece that only lists nice things. We point out one by one why the old apps actually died, and explain the structure with which PanSol solved those problems.

Failure ① Scam·prepayment — "pay and they vanish"

Reconstructed from a real case

In 2019, office worker Mr. Lee in Mapo-gu, Seoul, found a boiler-repair company via a smartphone app. 4.8 stars. 53 reviews. It looked trustworthy.

Drawn by "20% off with prepayment," he transferred ₩65,000. They said a tech would come the next morning.

The tech didn't come. Calls went unanswered. He opened the app and the account was deleted. ₩65,000. It never came back.

Structural problem of the old apps
Prepayment was possible
The old apps took prepayment from customers and pre-settled to companies, or simply let companies take prepayment directly. Since the platform didn't touch the money flow, it had no way to stop a scam. The platform dodged responsibility, calling it "a matter between customer and company."
PanSol solution
Escrow — settle only after completion
On PanSol, the amount the customer paid is held in an escrow account until completion is confirmed. The partner is paid only after completing the work and getting customer confirmation. Not a single won goes to the partner before the work. A scam is structurally impossible.
"At first I couldn't believe a pro would come without paying first. But that's just how it should be. There just hadn't been a platform that did the obvious, obviously."
— PanSol user Kim (Seodaemun-gu)

Failure ② Unqualified companies — "just register and you're a partner"

Reconstructed from a real case

Mr. Park in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, hired someone to replace an electrical outlet. The electrician found via the app came confidently and finished in 30 minutes.

That night, sparks flew from the outlet and the breaker tripped. The next day a licensed electrician checked and found the wiring was a mess. It could have led to a fire.

He contacted the tech, but "I did what I could" was the whole answer. The app's support said "it's a matter between partners."

Structural problem of the old apps
Registration without screening — anyone's a partner
For early growth, the old apps gathered partners fast. License checks? Permit review? Mostly none. With just a phone number and one photo, you became a "pro." Customers, not knowing that, trusted the "pro registered on the app."
PanSol solution
License verification + rating self-cleansing system
PanSol partner registration must pass a document review. Electrical work checks an electrical-work permit, boilers check a gas-related license — required verification differs by service. Even after registration, partners with a cumulative rating below 4.0 get an automatic warning, and if it repeats, they're excluded from matching. Customer reviews become a real monitoring net.

If someone unqualified fixes electricity,
the house can burn down.
That's not an exaggeration but something that actually happened.

Failure ③ Overcharging — "billed after, with no basis"

Reconstructed from a real case

Mr. Choi in Suwon asked for a drain-clog repair. The app said "base ₩30,000+."

The tech came, worked 30 minutes, and billed ₩180,000. The reasons: "special chemicals were needed," "the pipe was in bad shape." He couldn't refuse. The tech was already inside.

He reported it to the app. "It's the amount the partner judged on-site, so it's hard for us to intervene." That was the answer.

Structural problem of the old apps
Visits without a fixed quote — amount decided on-site
The old apps provided pre-visit quotes only "for reference." The actual amount was decided by the tech on-site, and the customer had to agree already in a disadvantaged position. "How do you send back a tech who's already inside?" — overcharging exploiting this weakness was rampant.
PanSol solution
Upfront disclosed quote — amount fixed before work
On PanSol, the partner presents a quote before visiting. Work starts only after the customer confirms and accepts the quote. Even when extra cost arises on-site, customer consent must be obtained. Billing extra without consent violates PanSol policy and suspends the partner's account.
"It's different that I saw the quote in advance and decided 'I'll do it at this price.' When you hear the amount with the tech already there, you can't say no."
— PanSol user Park (Suwon)

Failure ④ Unclear responsibility — "we're just a platform"

Reconstructed from a real case

Mr. Lee in Daejeon hired someone for wallpapering. A week after the work, the wallpaper started lifting in places. It had been applied to a damp wall without proper treatment.

He reported it to the app. The rep said they'd contact the partner. The partner claimed "I did it well." The app said "it's hard to verify on-site, so mediation is impossible."

In the end Mr. Lee had to re-wallpaper at his own expense. "The brokerage platform bears no responsibility" — a line written somewhere in the terms only then caught his eye.

Structural problem of the old apps
"We only connect" — the platform's evasion
The old platforms billed themselves as "tech-brokerage services" and stepped back from real responsibility. When a problem arose, they left it between customer and partner and looked on. When conflict grew, they suspended accounts or feigned ignorance. In the end the customer bore the full damage.
PanSol solution
Platform-guaranteed brokerage — if a dispute arises, we step in
PanSol acts as a real mediator between customer and partner. If there's a problem with the result, PanSol directly requests an on-site check and moves to coordinate. The amount held in escrow isn't paid until the dispute is resolved. For defects not the customer's fault, we guarantee a re-work or refund process.

If the platform holds the money flow,
it can also bear responsibility.
A platform that only connects and steps away
is actually doing no role at all.

Failure ⑤ Ad-revenue dependence — "click-selling isn't sustainable"

The story behind it

2015. A home-repair matching app received a big investment. It was an ad-revenue model. For a partner to be shown at the top of the app, they had to pay ad fees.

As a result, companies that paid a lot in ads rose to the top. Not because they were skilled, but because they spent a lot. Quotes from companies trying to recoup ad costs naturally rose.

Two years later, that app shut down. Once investment stopped, operating on ad revenue alone was impossible. What remained was partners' ad-fee losses and customers' emptiness.

Structural problem of the old apps
Ad-click revenue — a revenue structure unrelated to quality
The ad-revenue model doesn't link service quality and revenue. Even if a customer gets bad service, as long as the company pays ad fees it keeps being shown. The platform sides with the paying advertiser. The customer is lower priority. And once investment stops — the service ends that day.
PanSol solution
Fee model — we earn only when the service is completed
PanSol doesn't depend on ad revenue. We take a fee when the actual service is completed and settled. Only when the customer is satisfied does the partner earn, and PanSol earns too. All three parties' interests point the same way. During beta, we operate at ₩0 fee. Structure first, revenue later.
"Operating without a fee during beta seemed odd at first. But think about it — doesn't that mean real confidence? It means that if the service is good, people won't leave even when you charge a fee later."
— PanSol partner Han (2nd-year partner)

So, PanSol is different

The old apps disappeared not because of a lack of technology. It was because the structure was wrong.

A structure where advertisers come before customers, a structure where you don't have to bear responsibility, a structure where quality and revenue aren't linked. Within that structure, even a platform with the best intentions broke down.

PanSol is different. It ties up money with escrow, verifies qualifications, fixes the quote first, mediates when problems arise, and earns only when the service is completed.

A quadruple trust structure. This is why PanSol, even during beta with no fee, first built this structure before starting.

When a good home-repair platform appears,
good technicians are properly respected
and good customers fix their homes safely.

Making the obvious, obvious.
That's what PanSol is trying to do.

From the PanSol founding memo
๐Ÿ›ก

Have you been fooled before?
Did that make you resolve never to use a home-repair app again?

PanSol knows that distrust.
And it knows that distrust was warranted.

This time it's different.
Because the structure is different.

In 2020 I paid a boiler company ₩80,000 upfront and they ghosted me. After that I resolved never to use a home-repair app again... but the escrow-payment method really looks different. Has anyone used the beta service yet?

Hello! You went through that, that must have been so upsetting. We're currently in beta, available right at pansol.link. With escrow payment you can get service with no prepayment. If anything's uncomfortable, tell us anytime ๐Ÿ™

Reading this gave me chills. I'm exactly the ③ overcharging case lol. I said the drain was clogged, they quoted "from ₩30,000" so I called, then they billed ₩170,000. "Because we had to use a special method"... how do you refuse with the tech in your home. A system that fixes the quote in advance really was needed.

I'm a plumbing technician — what procedure do I go through to register as a partner? I have a plumbing-technician license. Running a business alone is really hard. Finding new customers especially is so tough, so I was looking for a platform. Is it true the fee is ₩0 during beta?
P
PanSol Team6 days ago
Yes, ₩0 fee during beta is correct! You can apply right away via the 'Register a business' menu at pansol.link. With a plumbing-technician license, passing verification is no problem. We'll tell you the approval result within 24 hours of applying. We'll be waiting!

Section 2 in the body is exactly my story... I also hired someone for electrical work and the wiring was wrong so the breaker kept tripping. I called another company and it turned out to be a dangerous state. I broke into a cold sweat. I learned firsthand why license verification matters. A platform that talks about this so openly is both surprising and reassuring.

The comparison table made it instantly clear. Why did you only make this now ใ… ใ…  I want to share it with everyone around me. Especially because parents in their 60s often get taken using apps like this. I'm curious whether the UI is simple enough for older people to use easily!

Thanks for the great question! There's an 'SOS emergency dispatch' feature that lets you request emergency dispatch with one button, so even those not used to digital, like parents, can use it easily. Would you take a look yourself at pansol.link? If you give feedback, we'll actively reflect it :)
